Testosterone Therapy for Men
Low Testosterone Evaluation & Treatment
Testosterone levels can decline for a variety of reasons. Symptoms alone do not establish testosterone deficiency, which is why a proper medical evaluation is important before beginning treatment.
Men may seek an evaluation for concerns such as:
- Decreased sexual desire
- Erectile or sexual health concerns
- Reduced energy
- Loss of muscle mass or strength
- Changes in mood
- Reduced motivation
- Other symptoms potentially associated with testosterone deficiency
Your Testosterone Evaluation
Before testosterone therapy is considered, your provider will review your symptoms, medical history, medications, risk factors, and appropriate laboratory results.
Evaluation and ongoing monitoring may include laboratory testing based on your individual circumstances.
If testosterone deficiency is appropriately diagnosed and treatment is suitable, testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) may be prescribed.
Ongoing Testosterone Management
Testosterone therapy requires continued medical supervision. Follow-up appointments allow your provider to evaluate:
- Symptom response
- Testosterone levels
- Treatment effectiveness
- Medication tolerance
- Potential adverse effects
- Hemoglobin and hematocrit when appropriate
- PSA/prostate-related monitoring when appropriate
- Cardiovascular and other health considerations
- Whether treatment should be continued or adjusted
Testosterone is a Schedule III controlled substance, and treatment is prescribed only when medically appropriate.
